As Raleigh residents are spending more time in their houses due to coronavirus, we thought it might be helpful to share some cleaning tips. During this time, we are all focused on doing everything we can to prevent the spread of coronavirus in our homes and our community. Here at Best Clean Ever, we are using EPA registered and approved hospital-grade cleaner to sanitize your home to kill coronavirus/COVID-19.

First, here is some general advice: keep it simple and keep it up. Wash your hands frequently and disinfect surfaces that are touched often. Refer to trusted sources for your information about the virus, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO). Try to steer clear of advice you see on social media, which may be ineffective.

Clean and Disinfect Frequently Touched Surfaces

We said it in the intro, but it’s worth repeating. To keep a clean, healthy home, you should be disinfecting surfaces like tables, countertops, light switches, doorknobs, faucets, phones, keyboards, sinks, and cabinet handles at least once a day. If this isn’t something you already do, this is a great time to build that habit!

A spray and a vigorous wipe is all you need, but be sure to get all the way around the surface. For example, run your rag or paper towel all around a doorknob and the entire plate of a lightswitch. Gloves are recommended for house cleaning, and we always wear gloves when providing house cleaning services, but they’re not necessary. Just be sure to wash your hands before and after you clean.

Use Cleaning Products For Intended Purposes

When the shelves of cleaning products at your store are empty, it can be tempting to start using products for other than their intended uses. Be sure to read or look up the manufacturer’s usage and ingredients before using it. You want to make sure that it is going to be effective and safe.

Also know that mixing cleaning products can be extremely dangerous, and even deadly. Mixing products that contain bleach, alcohol, or ammonia can create noxious fumes that can kill you.

Use Products That Kill Viruses

Not all cleaning products are equal. However, there are a great number of products that can effectively disinfect your home. You can find a great list of cleaning products in this sortable and searchable list from the EPA.

Bleach is a smart go-to right now, since it is widely available, unlike cleaning wipes. However, because bleach is a strong substance, it is very important to use it properly. As we said earlier, it’s important to use products for their intended purpose, and not mix with other products. Never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser. Though you can, and should, dilute it with water. The CDC recommends preparing a bleach solution for cleaning by mixing one-third cup of bleach per gallon of water, or 4 teaspoons per quart. When using bleach, wear gloves and ventilate the area.

How To Disinfect if Someone Is Sick

If someone in your home is sick with coronavirus, the flu, or any other contagious disease, house cleaning becomes especially important. You should clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects, but you should also go beyond that and clean everything that the person comes in contact with. Keep the sick person separated, and have them eat in their room, if possible. Wash their dishes using gloves and hot water. If possible, dedicate a lined trash can for the sick person and use gloves when removing the trash and wash your hands afterward.

One of the reasons that coronavirus is spreading so quickly is because it is able to be transmitted through casual contact. Scientists have discovered that it is detectable for up to four hours on copper, up to 24 hours on cardboard, and up to two to three days on plastic and stainless steel.
