One of the best ways to get grease stains out of clothing is to use the soap that’s designed to get grease off of your pots and pans — dishwashing detergent! It’s also close at hand if you spill oil on yourself while making dinner. As with any stain, the faster you treat it, the more likely you are to get it out. Dish soap has powerful, grease-busting properties and really works like magic on clothing! Here’s how to use dishwashing detergent to get grease stains out of clothes:
- Lay out the article of clothing and cover the entire stain with dishwashing liquid soap.
- Use your fingers to gently rub the soap into the fabric. You should start to see the stain dissolve.
- Leave the detergent in for as long as you think is necessary, depending on the extent of the stain.
- Rinse the dishwashing soap off and wash normally.
- If the stain persists, repeat the process!
If the grease stain has occurred on a delicate item of clothing, be sure to read the label and see if it’s ok to put a strong soap, like dish soap, on the clothing. Dish soap can damage more delicate materials, like silk and cashmere.
A good tip for getting out any stubborn stain in your clothing is to put detergent directly onto the stained area, working it into the stain with your fingers, and letting the detergent sit on the stain until you do laundry. v
After you’ve done this, check the label on your item of clothing and wash it on the hottest setting allowed for the fabric. When the washing cycle is complete, check the item to see if the stain has been removed. If not, wash again before drying. Drying can set the stain in your clothing, making it more difficult to remove.
Salt or Artificial Sweetener
Sometimes you get grease stains when you’re not at home and able to quickly change and treat the stain. If so, try sprinkling a little salt or artificial sweetener on the affected area. Doing so helps the stain from setting. Simply sprinkle, allow to sit for a few minutes, and then brush off the power. When you get home, immediately treat the stain with either dish soap or laundry detergent, following the steps we outlined earlier in this blog post. Keep this tip in mind the next time you’re out grabbing a greasy piece of pizza and accidently drip on your favorite T-shirt!
